Missions Announcements
- Remember to save your pull tabs and bring them to church! We have collected more than 3,000 so far this year!
- We donated nearly 100 lbs. of food to Ocean Grove’s Food Pantry last month.
Great Day of Service
The Great Day of Service at Annual Conference was June 11. We chose two projects to support this year. Point Hope UMC joined with
other United Methodist Churches to make a difference in the lives of those who need our love and support.
Central Conference Pension Initiative
Approximately 2,000 retired pastors, lay workers and surviving spouses in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe
are struggling to survive — growing their own food, relying on their children and even creating products to sell. In
areas where living conditions are already difficult, these faithful workers for Christ face economic insecurity
when their career in ministry ends — they will have little or no retirement income.
Our goal was to collect $1 per person for this project.
Care Packages for Troops
We collected items to put in packages for our troops. Items included:
- Snack food - Single serve canned or microwaveable foods, snacks, candy (not melty), Slim Jims, coffee, tea and flavored drink mixes, powdered creamer and sugar in small packages
- Toiletries – travel size hygiene products, brushes/combs, bug repellent wipes, mouth freshener strips, eyeglass cleaner wipes, eye drops, sunscreen, lip balm
- Entertainment – books, CDs, DVDs, international phone cards, all-occasion cards, hand held games, small toys (for soldiers to hand out)
Our goal was to collect 1 item per person.
Health Kits for Haiti
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has asked for help in providing supplies to Haiti. We will be collecting items for Health Kits for the next few weeks.
The items needed (MUST be NEW) are:
- Hand towels (no kitchen towels)
- Washcloths
- Combs (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
- Nail files or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
- Bars of soap (3 oz. and up)
- Toothbrushes (single brushes only in original wrapper, no child-size brushes)
- Adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
Monetary donations are needed too. Make your donations out to Point Hope UMC and designate it for "Haiti." If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Riley at (843) 881-0785.
Windwood Farm Mission Project
Point Hope donated to Windwood Farm's this past fall and helped provide school uniforms and supplies for the boys of
Windwood Farm. Windwood Farm is a group home for boys located in Awendaw. Boys that are removed from their homes due to instability come to Windwood to reside, receive therapy and attend the school on campus. The Missions committee has purchased school supplies for the boys. All donations collected reimbursed the Missions Fund and the remaining went to the school.
School Supplies Drive
Point Hope United Methodist Church collected enough school supplies during the summer to fill up 50 bags for UMCOR Sager Brown. A special thank you to all our members that donated and for those of you that helped sew the hand-made bags for the supplies.
Food Collection for Ocean Grove UMC
The first Sunday of each month we are asking for food items for the Ocean Grove UMC. Following the church service the donated items will be delivered to Ocean Grove UMC to be distributed where needed.
Operation: Christmas Child
Every November members of Point Hope UMC are encouraged to contribute to this very special mission project.
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through
gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes
have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe. People of all ages can be involved in this simple,
hands-on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas — Jesus Christ.
American Red Cross Blood Drive
Point Hope is actively involved in supporting the American Red Cross. Blood drives are scheduled periodically throughout the year and we encourage our congregation and members of the community to join us.
Point Hope supports Newborns in Need
Point Hope is proud to support the local Newborns in Need chapter. Newborns in Need makes and donates baby gowns,
blankets, and other essential baby items to hospitals, homeless shelters and other organizations
that provide for premature and newborn infants. All items are donated completely free of any charge. For additional
information about this outreach effort of Point Hope, contact Mary Rogers.
VBS children raise money for Epworth Children's Home
Every year during Vacation Bible School, the children collected spare change (and even dollar bills) to support our VBS mission project -
Epworth Children's Home. Our VBS
kids raid their parents' pocketbooks and wallets, the sofa cushions and even their own piggy banks and have consistently raised approximately $200 each year! These proceeds will go toward
birthday parties and presents for the deserving children at Epworth Children's Home. Everyone at Point Hope is so proud of the generosity shown by
our VBS youth.
ET is home!
Point Hope United Methodist Church celebrated the completion of an Elderly Transportable (ET) Cottage on April 13, 2008.
The project started in January 2008 and was completed as a collaborative effort with members of First United Methodist Church on
Isle of Palms. Pat Goss, executive director of the Mount Pleasant-based United Methodist Relief Center (UMRC) and a Point Hope member,
says the cottages provide area elderly poor with "safe, secure, comfortable housing." The UMRC took care of the
building plans and provided materials as well as the services of a professional construction project manager. Point Hope
and First United UMC provided all the labor to construct the cottage. Now that the house is completed, UMRC moves it
to the site where the new recipient will live rent-free. If the tenant requires long-term care or dies,
the UMRC "recycles" the house by re-painting it and repairing any damages that may have occurred before passing
it on the next person. The ET house is wheelchair-accessible and has a bedroom, bathroom, full-size kitchen and living room.
The house is secured by hurricane tie-down straps and connected to the existing sewer or septic system.
